John Clayton ( botanist ) studied the area in 1773 and found over 800 species of native plant species and discovered 2 new species : " Claytonia virginica " and " Osmunda claytoniana ".
Clayton's work was also studied by the European botanist George Clifford and Linnaeus later named a flower in Clayton's honor, a common eastern North American wildflower, the spring beauty, " Claytonia virginica ."
